The local area

Pays d’Olmes: The area lies in the Ariége between the vineyards and sunflower growing area further north and the high Pyrénées further south and so shares the beauty of both. The area is rich in fortresses used by the Cathars during the Albigensian crusade, (Montsegur, Roquefixade, Puivert, Lordat and Foix.) and pre-historic caves (Mas d’Azil, Niaux, Lombrives etc.) and bastides, fortified villages built with a market place. (Mirepoix) The hills are covered with vast forests and in the valleys one can find small isolated villages, small cattle farms and other delights. The hills and mountains are extremely rich in wildlife (swifts, buzzards, wild boar, deer) and places of botanical and geological interest. One can walk here for hours without seeing another soul.

A small blog about Lieurac and our beautiful Douctouyre valley.

Shopping: Supermarket, shops, petrol stations, banks, post offices and medical centres in Laroque d”Olmes (5km) or Lavelanet (7km). Mirepoix (15km) has many restaurants around the beautiful covered market. Typical French markets in Mirepoix, Lavelanet and Foix.

Visits: Medieval French towns of Carcassonne, Foix and Mirepoix and many more hidden treasures. Cathars castles, subterranean rivers, natural and pre-historic caves. The Pyrénéan mountains. Wine cellars, churches, cloisters and museums. Day trips to the Mediterranean, Toulouse and tax free Andorra.

Sports: Swimming and surfing at Lake Montbel (12km) as well as two spots in the very nearby small river. Horse riding and donkey hire. Walking (many public footpaths), Cycling( this is after all France!), Winter skiing and racquets (Mont d’Olmes 12 km and Ax-les-Thermes 25 km)

Visitors' comments "Of all the gites in France we have stayed at (21 we think) this is definitely in the top three, if not the best. We are booking for 2 weeks next year." (David and Sue - retired school teachers)
